Two foreign nationals sentenced for smuggling, passport offences

The Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) prosecuted two foreign nationals for involvement in people smuggling activities and failing to present their passports, during an operation at the Sungai Tujoh Immigration Control Post recently.

Hani Rahayu Suarsono, a 45-year-old Indonesian woman, was sentenced to three years in prison in lieu of failure to pay a BND6,000 fine, for an offence under Section 5(1) of the Prevention of People Smuggling Act, Chapter 229 for being involved in people smuggling activities.

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Indonesian woman Mala Fatmawati was sentenced for an offence under Section 3(2) of the Passport Act, Chapter 146 for failing to report and present her passport to the immigration officer on duty during immigration inspection.

The individual was sentenced to three months in prison in lieu of failure to pay a BND2,500 fine. The prosecution was made before Intermediate Court Judge Harnita Zelda Skinner.
