Two athletes break national records at Tuaran meet

Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Mu’min, President of Brunei Darussalam Athletics Federation (BDAF) met with the athletes who competed in the 3rd Tuaran Championship to congratulate them on their national achievements and new personal best at the Lecture Hall of Sports School Brunei Darussalam on Saturday.

Two of the athletes who broke the national records were Muhammad Noor Firdaus Ar-Rasyid bin Haji Mohd Idris for 100 metres (m) men category with the time of 10.48s; and Siti Nur Hafizatul Shazana binti Hamiroldzam in 5,000m female category with the time of 22:29.77s.

A total of 29 athletic athletes from all districts joined the 3rd Tuaran Championship in Sabah, Malaysia from September 30 to October 1.

During the two-day championship, Bruneian athletes joined a total of 32 Track and Field events including 100m male open category, 200m male open category, 800m male open category, 800m female open category, 1,500m female open category and 5,000m female category, javelin female open category, long jump male open category, shot throw open category.

Overall, Bruneian athletes bagged two gold medals in 100m and 200m male open category, three silver medals in 800m male open, 800 and 1,500 female open category; and one bronze for the 5,000m female category.

During the meeting with the athletes, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Mu’min and the BDAF announced the recognition of new categories for national record which are National Youth and Junior Records (Under 18). This is to encourage more youth to participate and compete in athletic sports.

With the recognition and taking into considerations Brunei’s past and present achievements, the official National Record for Youth and Junior will be announced in due time.

Since August 1 this year, the BDAF has been under the Presidency of Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Mu’min together with new federation members. More plans for improvemets and new initiatives to manage and further promote athletic sports in the Sultanate are currently being finalised and will be announced in January 2024.
