Chung Hwa School Tutong celebrated its 85th anniversary on Saturday with the official launch of its new BND1.5-million building and colourful performances by its students.
Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee, Chinese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo, Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin and Chung Hwa School Tutong Chairman Soon Seng Lee were present at the celebration at the school’s premises.
Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh shared that he was born in the Tutong District and the school was his alma mater, and wished the school and its students success.
The chairman meanwhile thanked donors and sponsors of the new building and highlighted the school’s success, including the 93-per-cent pass rate in the Primary School Assessment with six students securing 5 A’s. He also said that over half of the student population are non-Chinese, signifying the school’s diversity.
Ambassador Xiao said the Chinese Embassy in Brunei Darussalam is strengthening its cooperation with Chinese schools in the Sultanate to spread Chinese education and culture as well as develop friendly ties.
He believed the Bruneian Chinese community will continue to play a role in bilateral ties and cultural exchange to achieve greater development in the future.
The celebration saw a presentation of certificates of appointment to the new board of directors and a handover of souvenirs to sponsors and long-service award to school staff.
The dinner reception, featuring a multitude of performances, also raised BND94,670 for the school. – James Kon
