    Tunes and takedowns

Sakamoto Days made its Netflix debut on January 11, bringing with it a mix of heart-pounding action, laugh-out-loud moments, and soulful music. Based on Yuto Suzuki’s beloved manga, this adaptation is poised to offer both fans and newcomers an unforgettable experience.

At the heart of the new anime is Taro Sakamoto, the ultimate assassin who once struck fear into the underworld. But everything changes when he falls for Aoi, a kind-hearted convenience store clerk. Love compels Sakamoto to retire, swap his weapons for a shop apron and embrace a quiet life as a husband and father.

Of course, a man with his past can’t escape it so easily. Between running a mom-and-pop store and raising his daughter, Sakamoto must fend off a relentless wave of assassins determined to drag him back into the chaos.

This juxtaposition of the mundane and the extraordinary makes Sakamoto Days an anime that’s equal parts thrilling and heartfelt. Expect epic fight sequences, plenty of humour, and a touching narrative about the lengths one man will go to protect the life he’s built for his family.

    THE SOUNDTRACK

While the highly anticipated anime is said to set a new bar, we focus today on the two phenomenal theme songs that have complemented the show’s emotional highs and action-packed moments.

Vaundy, a 24-year-old multi-talented artist, delivers the opening track, RUN SAKAMOTO RUN. Meanwhile, rock band Conton Candy provides the ending theme, FUTSUU, a heartfelt tribute to the bond between Sakamoto and Aoi.

    RUN SAKAMOTO RUN

Vaundy describes his track as a tribute to Sakamoto’s unmatched strength and resilience.

Recorded in London, the song combines unique production elements with Vaundy’s signature genre-blending style.

“When I wrote RUN SAKAMOTO RUN, I aimed to convey the inspirational protagonist Sakamoto’s overwhelming, unmatched strength,” said Vaundy.

“I was fortunate to have the opportunity to record the song in London, which gave it a unique sound, making it a piece I can truly say I gave my all to. I hope the song ‘runs’ together with the manga, anime, and all of you guys!”

With hits like Tokyo Flash and Fukakouryoku already under his belt, Vaundy has become a household name in anime music, having worked on Chainsaw Man and Ranking of Kings.

Now, he’s set to inspire fans once again with this high-energy anthem.

    FUTSUU

For Conton Candy, FUTSUU marks their first foray into the world of anime soundtracks. The trio, known for their raw yet infectious sound, poured their hearts into crafting a song that captures Aoi’s warm and steady love for Sakamoto.

The title, which translates to ‘Ordinary’, is a nod to the beauty found in life’s simpler moments – a stark contrast to Sakamoto’s chaotic past. “This marks our very first anime tie-in, and we couldn’t be more honoured,” they shared.

“When we first received the offer, we were overjoyed and a bit surprised, but those feelings quickly turned into determination. With that excitement in our hearts, we poured everything into creating this song.”

“Well, the lyrics reflect Aoi’s feelings toward Sakamoto. They’re filled with warm and heartfelt words, so we hope you’ll take a moment to listen closely and feel the emotions in the song.”

Since forming in 2018, Conton Candy has quickly risen to fame with viral hits like Fuzzy Navel. Their noisy yet melodic grooves have earned them a devoted following, and their recent album melt pop solidified their place as a force to be reckoned with in the Japanese music scene. The song will be available on your favourite streaming platforms tomorrow.
