Travel agents discover Brunei’s Islamic heritage

Sixteen travel agents from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, specialising in Muslim and Islamic tours who visited Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (BKISHHB) saw it as a valuable asset, offering deep insights into Islamic history and culture.

They also praised Brunei’s peaceful atmosphere, which offers a serene setting for reflection, bringing tranquility to both the mind and soul.

Several agents, who already feature Brunei in their transit or city tours, expressed enthusiasm about expanding their offerings to include a more immersive four-night package showcasing Brunei’s rich Islamic heritage. The agents were particularly impressed by the unity of the Bruneians and the grandeur of Islamic celebrations, such as Maulidur Rasul and praised the local cuisine and admired the country’s cleanliness.

The familiarisation trip, organised in collaboration with the national airline, travel agents and hotels, is part of the Tourism Development Department under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism’s effort to establish Brunei Darussalam as a premier destination for Islamic tourism.

The visit, which coincided with the Maulidur Rasul celebration, allowed participants to experience Brunei’s Islamic heritage first-hand.

A special reception provided an opportunity for the agents to meet with local industry stakeholders, including representatives from Brunei’s national airline, hotels and tour operators. During their stay, the agents engaged in a series of activities showcasing Brunei’s vibrant Islamic culture.

Highlights included mosque visits and participation in the traditional Dikir Maulud, commemorating Maulidur Rasul. They also joined the Maulidur Rasul procession in the capital.

The tour featured significant Islamic landmarks, such as BKISHHB, where participants explored the Faith and Devotion Exhibition and engaged in hands-on activities at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Centre of Islamic Calligraphy and Arts Studies. In addition to Islamic activities, the agents explored Brunei’s cultural and natural heritage, visiting Ulu Temburong National Park, Kampong Ayer, and Lamin Warisan, while sampling Brunei’s authentic local cuisine. The familiarisation trip aimed to enhance Brunei’s profile as a leading Islamic travel destination by providing agents with a comprehensive understanding of the country’s Islamic heritage, cultural experiences and religious landmarks. – James Kon
