Traditional performances showcase Telegu culture

The Telegu Association (TA) in Brunei Darussalam organised the Telegu New Year ‘Ugadhi – 2024’ at the Youth Centre in the capital recently.

The celebration attended by almost 150 members showcased traditional dances, music, and cultural performances in ethnic Telegu regalia.

The Telegu New Year is called ‘Ugadi’ or ‘Yugadi’. ‘Ug’ means star movement, indicating the start of creation, hence ‘Ugadi’. ‘Yuga’ means age or cycle, and ‘Adi’ means beginning.

Yugadi marks the beginning of a new year with the transition of Uttaraayana and Dakshinaayana.

Indian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Alok Amitabh Dimri congratulated the Telegu community for their diligence, work ethic along with strong family and cultural values.

He also encouraged the community youth and families to enrich their life experience with a confluence of Malay and Indian cultures.

The event also saw the guests relish traditional coastal cuisine of Telegu people besides the presentation of souvenirs and awards to families. – Rokiah Mahmud
