The Weights and Measures Unit (SDT), Industry and Business Ecosystem Division under the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MOFE) conducted a mobile station verification service at Pasar Pantai Jerudong yesterday.

According to Director of Industry and Business Ecosystem Division Allen On, who was also present, the service is part of an ongoing initiative to protect consumers and encourage local businesses to be more transparent and ensure they comply with Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act, 1983 and the guidelines under the act.

During the service, SDT registered 13 units.

Over the past 12 months, SDT conducted 11 mobile station services focussing on traders at tamu, pasar and gerai perayaan (festive stalls) to ensure their weighing and measuring machines are registered and calibrated.

Additionally, distributors with 10 or more machines can make an appointment to register and calibrate the machines at their business premises before selling to customers.

Traders and users of the machines are required to comply as stipulated in the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994 under section 3(2); every person who uses or has in his possession for use for trade any weight, measure or instrument for weighing not stamped as required by this regulation shall be guilty of an offence.

The penalty for the offence is a fine of BND1,000 or imprisonment for three months or both and the weighing instrument shall be liable to be forfeited and any contract, bargain, sale or dealing made by such weight, measure or instrument for weighing shall be void.
