Totally Spies! returns in Singapore

(CNA) – Get ready for a thrilling undercover mission in Singapore! The beloved French cartoon Totally Spies! has made a triumphant return after a decade-long hiatus, with its seventh season premiering on Sunday, May 12th, in France.

The popular series follows the adventures of three teenage girls – Sam, Clover, and Alex – who lead double lives as international spies, tackling high-stakes missions around the globe.

Coinciding with the French premiere, the English version of the season’s trailer was released online and fans were excited to spot iconic Singapore landmarks like the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands, with the teaser proudly announcing a “Totally new location.”

Adding to the excitement, a new character, introduced as the “Totally new boss,” warns the trio about strange and frightening creatures that have appeared all over Singapore. This teaser fuelled speculation that the new season would be set in the vibrant city-state.

After eagerly watching the first episode of the new season in French, we can confirm: yes, the seventh season of Totally Spies! is set in Singapore. The show promises to bring even more action, mystery, and excitement, all set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most dynamic cities.

The show’s new setting is spoiled even in the episode’s synopsis and opening sequence where we see Sam, Clover and Alex visiting various landmarks in Singapore.

We won’t spoil the entirety of the episode but just know that by the end of it, the girls end up relocating to Singapore and even get themselves enrolled into a university called AIYA.

At the end of the episode, they even partake in one of Singapore’s favourite hobbies: Drinking bubble tea.

In a past interview with the team from French licensing fair Cobrandz, the producer of Totally Spies! Benoit Di Sabatino said of the change:

“(The main characters) will experience, just like our audience, a new culture that is unfamiliar to them. To do this, we worked with Singaporean screenwriter, voice artist and cultural consultant Elaine Chiew to ensure the precision and authenticity of our approach.”

The release date for the English dub of Totally Spies!’s new season has yet to be announced.

This isn’t the first time Singapore has been featured in a revival of a beloved cartoon show. Last year, Warner Bros produced a Tom And Jerry series set in Singapore which even featured an episode dedicated to durian.
