CNA – Daniel Radcliffe, renowned for portraying the iconic character in the Harry Potter film series, has achieved another milestone in his career by winning his first Tony Award.
At Sunday’s ceremony, Radcliffe secured the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his portrayal of lyricist and playwright Charley Kringas in the revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 musical, Merrily We Roll Along.
The musical explores how the lives and friendships of three friends evolve over two decades.
Radcliffe’s recognition at the 77th annual Tony Awards marked his first Tony nomination since debuting on Broadway in 2008, as well as his inaugural major acting accolade.
The Tony Awards, honouring excellence in Broadway theatre, are among America’s prestigious entertainment awards alongside the Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar awards.
Transitioning from his decade-long tenure as Harry Potter from age 11 to 21, Radcliffe has expanded his repertoire, garnering acclaim for stage performances and starring in independent films.
His portrayal of Weird Al Yankovic in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story earned him his first Emmy nomination in 2023.
Reflecting on his journey after Harry Potter, Radcliffe expressed his feelings backstage after accepting the Tony Award, stating, “When I finished (Harry Potter), I had no idea what my career was going to be. I’d already started doing some stage stuff, but I didn’t know what the future held at all.
“Playing one character for a very long time builds up in you a desire to, like, do as many things as you possibly can. So yeah, I’m doing that right now, which is awesome.”
