The recent data breach on QueUP, a popular mobile app, has brought about a pressing need to strengthen data security in the country.
The unauthorised access and collection of data, if sold to and used by external parties on the dark web, could cause a lot of harm to the population. What if nefarious actors use the information to access people’s bank accounts, steal their identities and carry out mass data mining on the population?
There is a need to improve the enforcement of our data security law, and financially incentivise stricter regulations for government and third-party app developers to catapult the cybersecurity system to a higher standard.
There can be no budgetary shortcuts here. We need to invest in high-quality systems for all public service apps and websites to prevent more data breaches from taking place. Perhaps it is an issue to be discussed in the upcoming Legislative Council meeting?
