The Intermediate Court yesterday handed a three years’ jail time and four strokes of a cane to an Indonesian man for attempting to steal electrical cables and causing disruption to key services.
Sutrimo Haryono, 44, pleaded guilty to the charges.
Judge Radin Safiee bin Radin Mas Basiuni gave the minimum sentence after seeing no aggravating factors.
Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad said the defendant was found by a police patrol while he was holding a shovel in a bushy area at Kampong Tunggulian at 2.40am on May 8.
The defendant tried to run but was caught and detained. He admitted to the attempted cable theft after being questioned by the police.
The defendant also told the police that he had attempted the theft twice, despite an initial reluctance with the plan he struck up with another person.
The defendant did not meet the other person during the second attempt.
