Three local men jailed for property laundering attempts

The Magistrate’s Court on Saturday handed jail sentences to a trio for their involvements in attempts to remove stolen vehicles, following the prosecution having proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.

Mohammad Tarmizi bin Husaini received two years and three months’ jail term while Mohamad bin Ismail, and Mohammad Sirhan bin Mohammad Shadan received two years’ jail term.

They were convicted after pleading not guilty and claiming trial to two joint charges of attempting to remove two stolen vehicles from Brunei to Miri, Sarawak on March 2, 2020 at the Sungai Tujoh Control Post.

Senior Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman was satisfied with Prosecutor Syafina binti Abdul Hadzid’s version of the case after calling in 11 witnesses to establish evidence.

However, following the sentencing, defence counsel for Mohammad Sirhan, lawyer Mohd Shazale Salleh of his own firm, expressed an intention to appeal against both conviction and sentence. He further applied for a stay of execution of his client’s sentence, a request which was granted by the court. – Fadley Faisal
