Three local men were sentenced to imprisonment for involvements in thefts at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

Defendants Md Sadiman bin Haji Ahmad, Md Irfan bin Abdul Rahman and Mohammad Izyan Akmal bin Khairol Asyraf pleaded guilty to crimes committed within the Faculty of Science building.

Md Sadiman, 30, received a three-year prison sentence from Judge Hajah Hazarena binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Hurairah on July 2 while Md Irfan, 29, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on the same day. Mohammad Izyan Akmal, 27, received a two-year prison sentence from Judge Pengiran Hajah Norismayanti binti Pengiran Haji Ismail on July 4.

Prosecutor Nur Zahidah Farhanah binti Abdul Aziz revealed in court that the thefts occurred on the evening of May 21. Md Irfan drove his accomplices to the building in his car. He entered the building and stole an automated external defibrillator machine while his co-defendants remained in the car to act as lookouts.

Md Irfan also stole items from an office including a laminator, cash and a canned soft drink.

Mohammad Izyan then broke into a laboratory and stole a printer, projectors and a laptop.

Md Sadiman joined his accomplice and stole more items from the laboratory.

University staff discovered the thefts and filed a report with the police. Investigations led to the recovery of most stolen items from Md Irfan’s house.

In addition to these charges, Md Sadiman and Md Irfan were also found guilty of stealing an air conditioning compressor from a UBD storehouse on May 15.

Md Sadiman also stole a 65-inch television from the university premises on a separate occasion in May.

Md Sadiman also stole a first aid box from the Faculty of Science on May 20 and damaged a Chemical Science Laboratory room’s door frame in an attempt to break in. – Fadley Faisal
