Three businesses were fined for failing to provide rest days, annual leave and public holidays for workers among other labour violations during recent inspections by the Labour Department.

According to the department, an inspection by enforcement officers at a grocery store found six offences under the Employment Order 2009.

The department said the employer failed to provide a written service contract, rest days, days off during public holidays and annual leave.

The employer had also failed to provide first aid equipment.

The department also said the employer had violated labour laws by having a foreign worker who was licenced to work as a packager, work as a cashier.

An inspection at a different grocery store found that the employer had failed to provide a service contract, one day of rest in a week and give days off during public holidays.

The department also fined the employer for making employees work over 12 hours a day, which were prescribed working hours under the law.

In the Belait District, an inspection at a tyre shop found two violations under the Employment Order 2009. The department said the employer had failed to give days off on public holidays and annual leave.
