Threads of life

Through intricate red threads Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota weaves a tale of life and art for the first time in Vietnam

HANOI (ANN/THE VIETNAM NEWS) – For the very first time, the people of Vietnam are being introduced to the awe-inspiring creations of Chiharu Shiota, a celebrated Japanese female artist renowned globally for her ground-breaking contributions to conceptual art.

This remarkable display of her artistry is unfolding at the Vincom Centre for Contemporary Art (VCCA) in Hanoi, in an exhibition titled “A Tide of Emotions.”

Within this unique space, meticulously designed for VCCA, Shiota has exclusively crafted pieces that respond harmoniously to the venue’s poetic architecture.

With her deft hands and utilising her signature material, red thread, Shiota weaves the threads of life, magically transforming ordinary, everyday objects into magnificent masterpieces.

Hundreds of thousands of threads crisscross like intricate pathways, linking the past and the present, reminiscent of ancient calligraphy and traditional looms, evoking a profound sense of heritage and timelessness.

In her intimate world of emotions, Shiota emerges as an alchemist, forging her artwork with the delicate touch of memory, the sanctity of homeland, the silent yet profound migrations, and the intricate dance between life and death.

Within a vibrant palette of crimson hues, she discovers the reverberations of her soul, intertwining with a celebration of life’s warmth.

‘A Tide of Emotions’ beautifully showcases Shiota’s artistry and it marks her inaugural artistic venture in Vietnam, delivering a universal message and a deeply humanistic essence that resonates profoundly with all who behold her creations.

Across decades of artistic exploration, Shiota has emerged as a paramount figure in global contemporary art.

Her influence as an Asian female artist resonates profoundly, as she fearlessly delves into diverse creative realms.

From the fleeting grace of performance art to the profound silence within paintings, and from the tangible essence of sculptures to the immersive world of installation art, Shiota’s journey has been a relentless pursuit of experimentation and self-challenge.

Shiota’s artistry is a fusion of installation and performance art, a captivating blend that has garnered global recognition.

Renowned for her grand-scale installations, meticulously crafted with hundreds of thousands of red threads, these artworks often dominate entire spaces.

Her intricate web of threads interlaces with ordinary objects from daily life—keys, windows, dresses, shoes, boats, suitcases—gathered from diverse corners of the world.

This network of seemingly mundane objects serves as a reminder of the interconnection between all things, the unpredictable intertwining of fate, and the importance of memories stored in each human heart.

Born in 1972, the Japanese contemporary artist currently lives in Berlin, Germany. Her works were exhibited in many prestigious museums and exhibitions in the region.

In 2015, she was selected as an artist representing Japan to participate in the Venice Biennale – the oldest and most prestigious international exhibition held every two years in Venice, Italy.

Her first exhibition in Vietnam, A Tide of Emotions, opens to public until March 30, 2024. The VCCA is located at B1 – R3, Vincom Mega Mall Royal City, 72A Nguyen Trai Street, Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi.

Within the framework of the exhibition, VCCA will organise others art education events to help audiences in better understanding the works and practices of the artist.
