Over 2,800 residents in the Brunei-Muara District braved the heat yesterday to greet His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital, during the get-together held in conjunction with the monarch’s 78th birthday celebration.
Well-wishers for His Majesty included members of various organisations, associations, grassroots-leaders, the business community as well as youth.
Some tourists also had the chance to get a glimpse of the monarch and other members of the royal family.
Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Lawi bin Haji Lamat said that the get-together has reinforced the sense of community and strengthened the ties between grassroots leaders and the broader population.
“The gathering served as a significant platform for community leaders and citizens alike to come together, reflecting the strong bond between the ruler and his subjects,” he added.
“The involvement of the public and private sectors, along with non-governmental organisations, at such events fosters collaboration and offers a unique opportunity for direct interaction with the nation’s leadership. Such engagements are crucial in promoting community growth and strengthening the partnership between the government and its citizens,” he said.
Meanwhile, Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry Deputy President Haji Abdul Saman bin Haji Ahmad said, “We view our participation in this event as a significant opportunity to engage with the monarch and to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Malay community.”
He added, “This event not only symbolises our respect for the monarch but also serves as a platform for strengthening economic and social ties within the community, all while honouring the legacy and leadership of His Majesty.”
Treasurer for the Chinese community booth at the get-together Soon Seng Lee said, “We are dedicated to celebrating His Majesty’s birthday with vibrant and joyous events. Our meticulous planning ensures that each year’s celebrations are a true reflection of our cultural contributions.”
He said, “Under the leadership of Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin, the Chinese community is well-organised and prepared, contributing significantly to the festival’s success.
“This reflects Brunei’s commitment to unity in diversity and fosters mutual respect among its diverse population,” he added.
Meanwhile, school teacher Jasdinah binti Haji Jasdi said, “As a citizen, we feel honoured to be blessed with a wonderful monarch. This is an exciting event for all of us to participate in with our friends and colleagues.”
Student Md Haziq Hadwan bin Haji Affendy Buang said, “I am thrilled to be part of the get-together event. I feel honoured to be here.”
A number of tourists also enjoyed the grand spectacle in the capital.
Italian tourists Luca and his wife shared their happiness and excitement over the colourful atmosphere they witnessed.
He said they were unaware of the event yesterday morning and enjoyed the sight of the monarch mingling with the people.
During their stay, they visited a number of historical places and tried the local cuisine, which he described as a new experience.
Meanwhile, Stephane, Emma and Wayan, who came from France, shared that this was their first time attending such an event.
