In celebration of Kuwait’s 63rd National Day and the 33rd Liberation Day, Ambassador of Kuwait to Brunei Darussalam Salah Mubarak Musleh Al-Mutairi in a message said this year’s commemoration will be observed with mixed feelings as Kuwaitis mourn the passing of Amir His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Despite the loss, Kuwait has witnessed a smooth transfer of power.

“This year marks the 34th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and Kuwait. Talking about Brunei-Kuwait ties, one cannot fail to recall the two historic official visits which have become milestones of our relations; the official visit of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to Kuwait in 2015.

The message added; “This was followed by the state visit of the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Brunei Darussalam in 2016. The two official visits have laid foundations for the two countries to succeed in building robust relations and bonds of friendship.

“Although progress on cooperation has been made in various fields, a reliable mechanism is needed to develop economic and trade cooperation further through the activation of agreements and memorandums of understanding signed by the two countries.

“Furthermore, the exchange of visits at senior officials-level give an opportunity to explore ways of promoting bilateral ties and to discuss regional and international issues of mutual concerns. In this connection, Kuwait looks forward to convening the first meeting of the Joint Commission headed by the foreign ministers of the two countries. In addition, Kuwait is keen to host the 4th Joint Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation (JCM).

“Meanwhile, a delegation from the Brunei Economic Development Board is expected to visit Kuwait at an invitation from the Investment Authority and Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry to hold discussions with Kuwait’s private sector and to deliver seminars on potential investment opportunities.

“Kuwait is also ready to collaborate with Brunei Darussalam on economic diversification matters.

“Cultural bonds have a very important presence in our bilateral ties. As more Bruneians are interested in learning Arabic Language, they should avail themselves of the scholarships provided by the Kuwaiti government to pursue their higher education.

“On the humanitarian sphere, Brunei Darussalam and Kuwait have been lauded for supporting the humanitarian efforts to ease the suffering of people affected by conflicts and natural disasters.” – Azlan Othman
