‘SWEET Smart’, a group of six third-year medical students from Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) conducted an educational booth, open to the public, on promoting the healthy level of sugar intake as part of a community project for their studies at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien on Sunday.
The booth featured activities and games designed to educate visitors on the importance of limiting the daily sugar intake. A set of questionnaires were handed over to assess the public’s knowledge, attitude, and perceptions on the topic.
The booth included exhibits on the amount of sugar contained in common foods and drinks, the health consequences of excessive sugar intake, and the daily recommended sugar intake.
Participants also learnt from the medical students practical tips on how to monitor one’s sugar intake.
UBD students also visited Rataie Primary School in Temburong District to raise awareness on the impact of sugar on dental health on Saturday.
The students’ Cavityfree.bn initiative included an educational talk and games for primary school students.
The campaign’s goal was to educate the public on dental cavities and highlight the harmful effects of excessive sugar consumption, a common issue in Brunei due to the widespread acceptance of high-sugar diets.
The campaigns aim to empower and encourage participants to make healthy and long-lasting changes in their dietary habits and oral hygiene practices, to reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases on healthcare in the Sultanate. – Azlan Othman & James Kon
