The path to excellence

At the heart of each student’s journey to success lies their unwavering commitment and hard work. Whether mastering intricate equations, refining artistic techniques, or excelling in sports, students consistently demonstrate a resolute determination to reach their utmost potential.

This steadfast dedication is key in achieving not just personal milestones but also in elevating standards of academic excellence on both national and international stages.

This pursuit of academic distinction is recognised and celebrated through various means, including the prestigious Best Student and Teacher awards. These awards, while highlighting individual and collective achievements, emphasise the crucial role of collaboration and support from teachers, parents and guardians.

These events, though filled with ceremony, serve as poignant reminders of the rigorous dedication and intellectual rigour that characterise the pursuit of knowledge and learning.

“I was not a student who had achieved high grades in the past, but I was passionate about learning and striving to do my best, which helped keep me motivated throughout my preparation for and during the exams,” said St Margaret’s School student Muhammad Shah Izzat bin Muhammad Saiful Ariffin.

After completing his Brunei-Cambridge (BC) GCE ‘O’ Levels last year, the student achieved high grades in the examination, attributing his success to a newfound appreciation and love for the subjects taught in school.

“It is important to find something you’re passionate about and love pursuing, as it brings happiness which can help motivate oneself in learning.”

Similarly, another student, Hana Rashiqah binti Haji Khairil Isman Sharwady also remarked that she did not expect to receive such high grades in her examinations. “I am very thankful to Allah the Almighty, as well as my parents, teachers, and friends who supported me throughout my entire academic journey. Their support has greatly helped me by providing everything I need.”

She also reminded other students, especially her juniors, not to become overly stressed or obsessed with achieving the highest grades possible, noting how there will be times when things don’t go their way.

“While there will be times when we do not achieve what we expected or want, we should not blame ourselves and deny the countless efforts and times that we have spent pouring our hearts into. That’s something to be grateful for and applauded,” she added.

At the heart of students’ academic achievements are dedicated educators who tirelessly nurture minds and cultivate talents. Teachers serve as mentors, imparting knowledge, instilling values and providing the guidance necessary for students to thrive. Their influence extends far beyond the classroom, shaping the trajectory of students’ lives and inspiring them to reach new heights.

One such teacher is Nurul Jannah binti Haji Mohd Yusof, who teaches art and design at Sayyidina Ali Secondary School. Having been recognised for achieving above the national average in the GCE ‘O’ Levels for 2023, she expressed her delight in her achievement, as it meant that her efforts have resulted in the success of her students.

“Normally, awards are given to students who have achieved high grades, but behind the hard work and effort made by the students is the constant and disciplined guidance of teachers who also work equally hard to ensure our students’ success. Teaching this subject (of arts and design) has been a passion of mine, and I support the idea of giving all students a chance to shine, be it in science or creativity, which can help inspire them to pursue a wider career scope in the future.”

Ultimately, the journey to academic excellence is a collaborative effort that involves a village of supporters. Students, teachers, parents, and guardians all play vital roles in this endeavour.

While students exhibit unwavering commitment and hard work, teachers provide constant and disciplined guidance, nurturing minds and cultivating talents.

Parents and guardians offer support and encouragement, while the wider community celebrates and recognises achievements.

Together, they create an environment that fosters a love for learning and inspires students to reach their fullest potential. – Daniel Lim
