This clever play on words, derived from the iconic phrase “May the Force be with you”, has evolved into an annual tradition uniting fans in a galaxy-wide celebration of their love for Star Wars.

On May 4, Bruneian enthusiasts joined fans worldwide in a flurry of festivities, donning costumes, hosting movie marathons, and engaging in spirited debates over the saga’s finer points.

It was a day to revel in nostalgia, bond with fellow fans, and reaffirm the enduring power of the Force – even by one of many fans’ favourite Jedi Master Rey costume underwater. May the Fourth has become a global phenomenon, a day when fans proudly proclaim their allegiance to the Force and revel in the shared experience of being part of something truly special.

The Bulletin spoke to one of these enthusiasts who celebrated May the Fourth – Ling, 43. She shared her unique experience celebrating it underwater.

“I went as Rey because I already had her costume,” she explained with a laugh.

Diving at Bubble Reef for the first time, she marvelled at the beautiful sight of columns of bubbles rising from the ground.

Despite the challenges of navigating underwater in costume, Ling found the experience incredibly rewarding.

“I usually celebrate Star Wars in some way, and this year it just so happened to coincide with a dive. It was so much fun that I’m hoping to do it again next year,” she said.

Ling particularly thrilled by the abundance of octopuses at Bubble Reef in Jerudong, praised the fun dive crew that made the experience memorable.
