BANGKOK (Bernama) —  Thailand’s former prime minister Prayut Chan o-cha has been appointed as a member of the prestigious Privy Council, a small body of advisers to the monarchy.

The Royal Gazette on Wednesday announced that Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn appointed the 69-year-old Prayut to become a privy councillor with immediate effect.

“The king had decided to appoint more members to the privy council,” it said.

Prayut was a former army chief who seized power in a coup in 2014. He became prime minister in the 2019 election.

Prayut was the prime minister candidate of the United Thai Nation Party in the May 14 election. However, the party emerged as the fifth largest winner in the election, winning 36 seats in the House of Representatives.

The former prime minister announced his retirement from politics in July this year.
