Talk reminds students to respect parents

Children must treat their parents well as well as be obedient whenever instructed, said a guest speaker from the Islamic Da’wah Centre yesterday.

Siti Noraini binti Haji Mohd Hashim was one of the guest speakers as part of the GINIS B programme hosted by Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Primary School.

The speaker said every child should be soft-spoken when talking with their parents and heed their warnings or advice if their actions are deemed unacceptable.

They must also learn how to comfort their parents and greet them with respect.

She also touched on actively practising religious acts such as reciting the Zikir and honouring teachers so that they will be blessed with knowledge.

Meanwhile, Nurul Nazurah binti Jaya from the Community Development Department spoke on abuse by a parent to his or her child and how such incidents can be reported.

The speaker highlighted a case of a 17-year-old teenage girl who contacted Talian Anak 121 to complain that she was abused, kicked and beaten by her biological father because of debt issues.

The student was often used as a ‘punching bag’ for her father to vent his anger, resulting in the student being injured.

This, she said, will lead to the student suffering from trauma and becoming afraid to socialise with people; a strained relationship with the father; the student not forgiving the father as well as losing respect towards him. To ensure that such incidents will not be repeated, immediate action will be taken including transferring the victim to a safe place (place of safety) and next-of-kin to provide protection and care; informing the school principal to provide cooperation and ensuring no contact with the perpetrator.

The suspect will be questioned by the police and will be released on bail with a warning not to approach the victim and will be imprisoned if found to be breaking the order.

Other speakers included representatives from the Counselling and Religious Understanding Unit at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Cyber Security Brunei. – Fadhil Yunus
