Talk highlights periodic table’s history, significance

Professor of Chemical Physics and Science Communication at the University of East Anglia, Professor Dr Stephen Ashworth, delivered a talk on ‘Elementary! A Celebration of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements’ at Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Pro-Chancellor Arts Centre on Wednesday.

Professor Dr Ashworth, renowned for his ‘Kitchen Chemistry’ outreach project, demonstrated how the principles of chemistry can be explored with everyday household items. His international acclaim, particularly through his partnership with Scifest Africa, has made him a significant figure in science communication and education.

The talk focused on the evolution of the periodic table, tracing its development from Dmitri Mendeleev’s groundbreaking creation to its modern form. Professor Dr Ashworth highlighted the history and significance of the periodic table, emphasising its impact on science and everyday life while sharing intriguing stories behind some of its most remarkable elements.

Following the talk, the event saw a question-and-answer session.

The event aimed to inspire curiosity and foster a love for research among youth in the Sultanate.
