    Symposium marks World Spine Day

A symposium on back pain was held in conjunction with World Spine Day at the Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) yesterday.

Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional) at the Ministry of Health Dr Ang Swee Hui was the guest of honour.

The deputy permanent secretary shared that a recent study highlighted concerning statistics on low back pain, citing that 619 million suffered in 2020 from lower back pain with a projected increase to 843 million over the next decade.

He noted that low back pain imposes a substantial societal and economic burden. “It leads to productivity loss, increased medical costa and absenteeism from work. The need for prevention strategies is glaringly evident,” said the deputy permanent secretary.

It was the first spine symposium hosted by the Neurosurgery Department under the Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre, said PJSC. – James Kon
