Syariah forum highlights ethical finance

The Syariah Advisory Forum (SAF), hosted by the Brunei Institute of Leadership and Islamic Finance (BILIF), underscored the role of Syariah advisors in promoting ethical and sustainable finance.

Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BILIF Haji Afero bin Haji Eswandy Mohamad, in his welcoming remarks, stressed the importance of integrating sustainable development goals (SDGs), and Environmental, Social and governance (ESG) principles into Syariah-compliant products and services.

Themed ‘Integrating Sustainable Development in Syariah Decision-Making: A Path to Achieving SDGs’, the forum served as a platform for industry stakeholders in Islamic finance to share experiences and best practices.

Discussions explored how Syariah principles can align with global sustainability efforts.

The forum, at the Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA) building, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday, gathered practitioners from the public and private sectors.

President and CEO of INCEIF University, Malaysia Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Mohd Azmi Omar delivered a presentation.

This was followed by a panel discussion on ‘Advocating SDGs through Maqasid-Based Syariah Finance’.

The panel featured head of Islamic Sustainable Finance at CIMB Islamic Bank, Malaysia Arshad Nuval bin Othman; Syariah Advisory Council member of the Securities Commission Malaysia Dr Akhtarzaite binti Haji Abdul Aziz; and moderator Senior Manager of Syariah Finance at Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) Khairul Anuar Haji Ahmad. A second panel discussion, ‘Maqasid-Based Sustainable Development Framework: Use Cases’, moderated from the School of Business and Economics at UBD Dr Mohd Hairul Azrin Haji Besar, featured contributions from industry experts.
