Summer camp encourages students to support sustainable development

Students have the potential to be catalysts for change and support sustainability to champion a greener, more sustainable world, said Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab.

She said this during the closing ceremony of UBD-ASEAN University Network (AUN) Summer Camp 2024 at the Senate Room, Chancellor Hall at the university’s premises yesterday.

The two-week programme, themed ‘Green Horizons: Harnessing Digital Transformation for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’, saw a variety of activities including student development workshops, table topic presentations and a beach cleanup event. It also saw social activities and cultural field trips to enrich the participants’ experiences, fostering connections and unity among ASEAN youth.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia student April Chooi described the camp as an eye-opening experience that inspired her to found a non-profit organisation in her home country.

Another student, Kuroshini A/P Sathurugnan Saravanan, said she feels motivated to contribute more to the community and excited about continuing her education at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

A highlight of the programme was the Green Horizons Flower Planting ceremony, where participants planted flowers at the UBD campus, symbolising their shared commitment to sustainability and the lasting impact of the summer camp.

Global Discovery Programme coordinator Jaini bin Haji Jumat expressed gratitude for the success of the summer camp.

He highlighted the comprehensive framework of the programme designed to inspire participants as agents of change, acknowledging the significant contributions of collaborators.
