His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday began a state visit to the Republic of Türkiye and attended a Welcoming Ceremony; Four-Eye Meeting and Bilateral Meeting with the President of the Republic of Türkiye; Signing Ceremony of Agreements; Press Conference; State Banquet; and a Wreath Laying Ceremony.
WELCOMING CEREMONY; FOUR-EYE MEETING; AND BILATERAL MEETING
The Welcoming Ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace, Ankara, in which His Majesty was welcomed upon arrival at the Presidential Palace by President of the Republic of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The ceremony began with both leaders proceeding to the Special Dais to receive the Salute of Honour accompanied by the National Anthems of both countries, and a 21-gun salute. The ceremony continued with the inspection of the Royal Guard of Honour mounted by members of the Turkish Armed Forces.
His Majesty was then introduced to dignitaries from the Republic of Türkiye, followed with the introduction of Brunei Darussalam’s delegation to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Both leaders then proceeded to the Four-Eye Meeting, followed by the Bilateral Meeting where His Majesty and the President of the Republic of Türkiye, among other things, discussed matters of mutual interest towards further strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries, including cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, education, culture, and defence.
SIGNING CEREMONY OF AGREEMENTS; AND PRESS CONFERENCE
Following the meeting, His Majesty and the President witnessed the signing ceremony of five agreements between the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the Government of the Republic of Türkiye, namely:
PROTOCOL ON COOPERATION BETWEEN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM AND THE DIRECTORATE OF STATE ARCHIVES OF THE PRESIDENCY OF THE REPUBLIC OF TÜRKIYE
The document was signed by Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Haji Mohammad Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan on behalf of the Government of His Majesty and Director of State Archives of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Prof Dr Ugur Unal on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Türkiye.
The protocol will promote researches and exchange reproduced samples of archival documents, exchange of experts in the field of archives, exchanges on publications on archives management, and organise scientific or technical meetings.
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING FOR COOPERATION IN THE FIELD OF HIGHER EDUCATION BETWEEN THE COUNCIL OF HIGHER EDUCATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF TÜRKIYE AND THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
Signing on behalf of the Government of His Majesty was Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, while signing on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Türkiye was, President of the Council of Higher Education of the Republic of Türkiye Prof Dr Erol Özvar.
The memorandum of understanding aims to establish the institutional framework for both countries to organise academic and scientific exchanges between the higher education of both parties.
DECLARATION OF INTENT BETWEEN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM AND THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF TURKIYE ON DEFENCE COOPERATION
Signing on behalf of the Government of His Majesty was Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, while signing on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Türkiye was President of the Defence Industry Agency of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Prof Dr Ismail Demir.
The declaration of intent (DoI) is to establish a framework for defence cooperation with a view to enhancing and developing cooperation between both countries.
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF HIS MAJESTY THE SULTAN AND YANG DI-PERTUAN OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TÜRKIYE ON CULTURAL COOPERATION
The memorandum of understanding was signed by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad, on behalf of the Government of His Majesty and Minister of Culture and Tourism on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Türkiye Mehmet Nuri Ersoy.
The memorandum of understanding will facilitate and encourage mutual cooperation in the fields of music, theatre, archives, libraries, museums, cultural heritage, dance, visual arts, film, copyright, folk-crafts, decorative and applied arts, circus and other artistic forms.
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM AND THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE REPUBLIC OF TÜRKIYE ON BILATERAL CONSULTATIONS
Signing on behalf of the Government of His Majesty was Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan, while signing on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Türkiye was Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.
The memorandum of understanding aims to institutionalise bilateral consultations and to conduct regular exchanges of views on issues of mutual interest to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the pursuit of common goals.
After the signing ceremony, His Majesty and the President of the Republic of Türkiye attended a press conference.
STATE BANQUET
In honour of the state visit, His Majesty also attended the state banquet hosted by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Palace.
WREATH LAYING CEREMONY
In a separate event held earlier yesterday, His Majesty attended a wreath laying ceremony at Anıtkabir, Ankara.
The arrival of His Majesty at Anıtkabir was greeted by Commander of Anıtkabir Colonel Ümit Yücelen. His Majesty then laid a wreath at the mausoleum.
Also present was Minister of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Türkiye Mustafa Varank.
The Anıtkabir – which was officially opened on September 1, 1953 – is a mausoleum dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader of the Turkish War of Independence, as well as the founder and first president of the Republic of Türkiye.
