Sultanate tackles rising cardiovascular deaths

Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death worldwide, and Brunei is no exception. Brunei recorded 669 cardiovascular deaths last year compared to 416 cases in 2021, making cardiovascular disease the second major cause of death in the Sultanate, said Cardiac Society Brunei Darussalam (CSBD) President Pengiran Dr Md Nadzir bin Pengiran Mohd Juanda.

He said this during the society’s 10th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) at the Indera Samudra Grand Hall of The Empire Brunei in Jerudong yesterday.

“It is through conferences and meetings such as this that we can update ourselves with the latest development in cardiology with regards to prevention and treatment of cardiac-related conditions and reduce mortality and to make a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of our community,” he added. This year’s event is the 10th iteration with the highest number of local participants, amounting to almost 600 people in attendance, comprising doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and students.

The event also featured a panel of local and international speakers sharing their expertise on topics related to cardiovascular disease.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health (MoH) Haji Maswadi bin Haji Mohsin officiated the opening of the meeting. The permanent secretary also presented the Fellow of the Cardiac Society to Pengiran Dr Md Nadzir.
