His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will attend the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit in Saudi Arabia on October 20.
The ASEAN–GCC Summit, to be co-chaired by Indonesia as the Chair of ASEAN in 2023, and Saudi Arabia, will gather ASEAN and GCC heads of state and government for the first time since ASEAN-GCC relations were formally established in 1990.
The ASEAN-GCC Joint Vision was adopted at the first ASEAN-GCC ministerial meeting in June 2009 in Manama, Bahrain, to explore areas for cooperation between the two parties. Following the ministerial meeting, ASEAN and GCC finalised the ASEAN-GCC’s two-year action plan for 2010 to 2012, where cooperation encompassed areas such as trade, economic cooperation and development, as well as culture, education and information.
The summit is expected to discuss ways to further strengthen ASEAN-GCC relations and advance collaboration on issues of mutual interest such as digital economy and climate change.
