Sultan hosts state banquet for Philippines president

“The enduring ties that we enjoy at all levels today truly reflect our shared history and accomplishments, initiated and built upon during the presidency of the late President Marcos Sr,” said His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday.

His Majesty said this in a titah during a state banquet at Istana Nurul Iman hosted by His Majesty and Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam, in honour of Philippines President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, as well as the delegation who are in the country for a two-day state visit.

His Majesty in the titah added, “Your visit is a testament to the strong friendship and close relations since our diplomatic relations were established 40 years ago. I also fondly remember your first visit here in 1984, when you accompanied your late father, President Marcos Sr, during our inaugural National Day celebration.

“Since then, our countries have cooperated closely in education, health and people-to-people exchanges.

“Brunei Darussalam is committed to further strengthen these important relations to protect and safeguard our common aspirations. Therefore, I am pleased that the documents signed during your visit, Mr President, will further contribute to our country’s continued growth and development.

“These agreements pave the way for cooperation in the maritime, agriculture, and tourism sectors, which will bring significant benefits for both our nations. Brunei Darussalam and the Philippines have forged strong cooperation on sub-regional initiatives, particularly BIMP-EAGA, establishing fruitful partnerships in energy, agriculture, fisheries, and environmental issues.

“In addition, we are also working closely within ASEAN to ensure its centrality remains relevant in the region.

“Therefore, I look forward to continuing our work to advance ASEAN’s community-building efforts in promoting regional peace, security and development.

“Mr President, in closing, I would like to take this opportunity to extend our warmest congratulations and best wishes to you, the government and the people of the Philippines for a happy Independence Day celebration next month.”

Their Majesties also wished the Philippines president and first lady continued good health and happiness and for the peace and prosperity of the Philippines and its people.

The banquet saw the recitation of Doa Selamat by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, followed by a speech from the Philippines president.

Members of the royal family and the Philippines delegation were also present.
