For many decades, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore have enjoyed strong ties across many sectors, building trust and confidence as a solid foundation for the future.
This was said by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in a titah during an official luncheon for Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s first official visit to the Sultanate.
His Majesty said that as two small, sovereign states surrounded by larger neighbours, both countries share a common desire that stems from the close friendship between Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien and the late Lee Kuan Yew, former Singapore prime minister.
Building on this friendship, “unique and special ties” were established with cooperation in defence, education, health, and currency which has been vital in ensuring the stability of both countries’ economies during regional financial crises and economic downturns.
His Majesty expressed appreciation for Singapore’s support during the COVID-19 pandemic, and highlighted that, in an increasingly uncertain future impacted by climate change, geopolitical conflict, and major power competition, both sides have continued to strengthen partnership in food security and the medical supply chain.
An audience ceremony and bilateral meeting were also held as part of the official visit.
Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam and the Singapore Prime Minister’s spouse Madam Loo Tze Lui were also present.
