His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam reminded that national development which needs to be achieved is not just confined to constructing magnificent building but what is more meaningful is to build facilities and systems that give positive impact to the people, just like the development of human resources to produce people who are progressive, independent, and not solely relying on the government.

In a titah to mark the 39th National Day last night, His Majesty said in this context, education should not be neglected. “We need people who are highly educated and skilfull.”

His Majesty noted that skills in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) should be strengthened taking into consideration the importance of these skills as catalyst for development.

“And relating to the field of education, I wish to see the conventional and religious educational schemes uniting under the same management so that educators could be integrated during schooling hours which is to fulfil and facilitate parents and guardians when sending and picking up their children,” added His Majesty.

“Equally important is embracing religious knowledge and decent values as a basis to strengthen the national identity,” His Majesty said.

“Hence the younger generation comprising students and youth should be brought to know and embrace religious teachings.”

His Majesty also said National Day is an important occasion to be remembered as it reminds us of the efforts and sacrifices made by our predecessors in seeking ways towards attaining independence.

The price of independence is difficult to be valued as it is not a static object that can be counted figuratively but a platform to seek something better.

“For instance through independence, we enjoy what we have not enjoyed. Is it not a great achievement?,” His Majesty asked.

“Hence independence should be upheld to decorate our life in living in a nation and for the people. We uphold it by fulfilling our obligation in a transparent and perfect manner and not out of self-interest.

“Our main obligation now is to see the goal of our Vision implemented. We cannot procrastinate or relax as we only have 12 more years to realise such a Vision.

“Hence the government should prioritise the Manpower and Social Blueprint soon as a future direction for every plan and action of stakeholders in the government.”

The monarch said, ”I hope these blueprints including the Economic Blueprint becomes a source of reference for the public especially the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to frame out strategy and plan of action.

“The Ministry of Finance and Economy as the leader of Brunei Darussalam Economic Blueprint has completed the industrial roadmap for food, oil and gas downstream industry as well as maritime service industry.

“Meanwhile the roadmap relating to information technology and infocommunication has been under review and is being formulated.

“Roadmaps in core industrial sectors are aimed at improving the ecosystem and for industries to enhance their respective efforts towards strengthening nation’s economy.”

His Majesty added, “To support micro, small and medium- sized enterprises (MSMEs), my government is drafting an MSME policy towards enhancing productivity.”

His Majesty thanked all parties including participants, officers, and committee members who have worked hard in making this year’s 39th National Day a success.

The monarch also expressed appreciation to people from all walks of life including public servants working locally and abroad, security personnel, volunteers including youth and those in the private sector and prayed that the people and the nation are always under the guidance and protection of Allah the Almighty.
