His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in a titah on Tuesday expressed concerns about the adverse effects of social media misuse on society.
In a titah during the 13th Convocation Ceremony of Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPU SB), which took place at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas, His Majesty who is also Chancellor of KUPU SB, articulated that the pervasive misuse of social media platforms has, regrettably, begun to affect the populace at large. This phenomenon, the monarch said, has given rise to a multitude of social issues, including detrimental impacts on mental health, moral values, and wastefulness.
Furthermore, His Majesty noted that it has the potential to nurture unrealistic fantasies.
In this critical context, His Majesty underscored the importance of the family institution, asserting that it bears the responsibility of vigilant monitoring and gaining knowledge about both the indoor and outdoor activities of their children.
The monarch called upon all relevant authorities responsible for managing information and communication technology to redouble their efforts in overseeing and regulating websites, applications, video games, and social media platforms that have the potential to influence faith, morality, health, and discipline adversely.
During the ceremony, His Majesty awarded certificates and diplomas to 234 graduates. –Rokiah Mahmud
