A group of students from Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) Kuala Belait, St John’s School and St James’s School gathered at the multi-purpose hall of CHMS Kuala Belait to participate in the School Green Day programme on Tuesday.

The event aimed to educate secondary and tertiary students about the causes, effects and solutions to climate change and sustainability.

Gleneagles JPMC Corporate Communications and Customer Relations Manager Rusydina binti Haji Junaidi, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainability and its role in leading the community by example.

She said, “We hope to spread awareness to the larger community through our corporate social responsibility programme in educating the next generations of this important mandate.”

Over the two-day programme, students learnt about the fundamentals of climate change, explored the key factors contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and developed strategies to tackle the problem. They were divided into groups and tasked with creating giant art murals from recycled paper and waste to convey a powerful message about protecting the ocean.

The programme also highlighted the urgent need for responsible consumption in Brunei, which ranks second in ASEAN for waste per capita.

Yesterday, the students focused on plastic-responsible consumption and sustainable fashion, learning about recycling, repurposing used plastic materials and the negative environmental impacts of waste.

School Green Day is a programme endorsed and supported by the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, Brunei National Council of Climate Change and the Ministry of Education.

The programme has reached 10 institutions this year and is on track to reach 15 schools by the end of the year. – Daniel Lim
