The School-Based Disaster Risk Management (SBDRM) Programme, organised by the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) in collaboration with the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education, was held from November 7 to 9 at Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College (SOASC) in the Brunei-Muara District.
Sixty students and teachers participated in the programme including Year 9 to Year 11 students from SOASC, Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School, Raja Isteri Girls High School, Menglait Secondary School, Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School, Masin Secondary School, Sayyidina Hassan Secondary School, Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School, Awang Semaun Secondary School and Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School, Mentiri. Throughout the course, students and teachers learnt the functions and roles of the NDMC, recognising risks and be ready for any disaster.
Students participated in group exercises such as ‘do’s and don’ts’ before, during and after disaster events, nature power, grab bag, hazard visit and formulating a disaster action plan for school community preparedness.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Safety and Welfare) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Nor Hamidah binti Haji Hamidon, the guest of honour, presented certificates to students and facilitators involved in implementing the SBDRM Programme. – Adib Noor
