Innovative and first-of-its-kind projects by 314 students from various faculties and schools at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) were on full display during the UTB Project Showcase 2023 at the university’s premises yesterday.

Organised by the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics (SASM), the event was launched by Vice-Chancellor of UTB Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman.

The projects came from students of the SASM, Faculty of Engineering (FEng), School of Computing and Informatics (SCI), UTB School of Business (UTB-SB), School of Design (SDe), and UTB Centre for Communication, Teaching and Learning (CCTL).

Under the theme ‘Empowering Creativity and Innovation towards a Sustainable Future’, the one-day showcase aimed to recognise and celebrate undergraduate students’ achievements in their final years of studies.

The event also provided a platform for private and public organisations to scout promising talent.

Dean of SASM and Chairperson of the showcase Dr Namasivayam Navaranjan said, “UTB is a technological and innovative university. Its curriculum encourages students to combine their theoretical and practical knowledge that they have gained during their undergraduate study to do innovative projects in the final year with the help of dedicated supervisors.

“This showcase exhibits new inventions and products created from multi-disciplinary areas which will be of value in immediate commercialisation or for further development for high-value commercial outcomes, and even publications in highly-recognised journals and conferences.

“There is an opportunity for students to win the People’s Choice Award, which is given to each school based on votes from visitors to the showcase.”

The FEng displayed the largest share of projects, with 108 final year projects and 16 group design projects.

The SASM showcased 21 projects while the SDe showcased 19 projects. The UTB-SB exhibited 78 projects, followed by 68 projects by the SCI. Additionally, there were four projects related to MIB under the CCTL.

The event was part of the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2023 (Brunei MYCE 2023) organised by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism through the Tourism Development Department in collaboration with local and international government agencies, statutory bodies, higher educational institutions, stakeholders and private agencies.

The Brunei MYCE 2023 is also supported by Radio Television Brunei (RTB), the Information Department (Pelita Brunei) and Brunei Press Sdn Bhd as media partners.
