The essential missions and goals of a diplomat is to foster international relations and promote mutual understanding among nations, said French Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Eve Lubin during the talk ‘The Diplomatic Profession’ hosted by Alliance Française de Brunei Darussalam (AFBD) recently.
The ambassador offered insights into the pathways to becoming a diplomat, detailing the necessary educational background, skills and experiences. Her advice for aspiring diplomats included the importance of networking with current diplomats, studying relevant subjects such as international relations and law, seeking internships at embassies or international organisations, enhancing language skills – particularly in the official United Nations languages – preparing for any entrance examinations with a collaborative mindset, and approaching the profession with both confidence and humility.
The event composed students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam specialising in international studies, along with sixth form students.
The ambassador also addressed the challenges faced by diplomats in today’s complex global landscape, providing an overview of the demands of the profession.
The talk concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing attendees to ask questions and further explore the intricacies of diplomatic work.
The event was also attended by AFBD President Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah, AFBD Director Guillaume Graff and AFBD Deputy Ambassador Carole Bouvier-Loisel. The event underscores the commitment of AFBD to promoting French culture and fostering dialogue on important global issues.
