Students attend HIV awareness session

Some 23 Year 10 students from Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College (SOASCollege) attended the (HIV Awareness Programme for Peers and Youth (HAPPY) conducted by the Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAIDS) Council at the school premises recently.

BDAIDSCouncil project coordinator Siti Kailene Jazlan Kashfi briefed students on HIV, including knowledge on teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

HAPPY is a youth-led project and an interactive programme that combines audio and visuals as well as interactive activities to pass on the message to youth, including messages adapted to local settings.

Siti Kailene shared the latest statistics on STIs and teenage pregnancy, highlighting the age and gender dominating the statistics.

She added that these issues can be curbed by applying abstinence as part of keeping youth from involving in risky behaviours leading to the contraction of STIs, getting pregnant out of wedlock or early marriage. – James Kon
