Students’ participation in national events and teachers’ development in the Sultanate were among topics of discussion at the 19th Legislative Council (LegCo) session yesterday.

Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh said some 15,000 students were involved during the 76th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam last year, while almost 4,000 were involved in the 39th National Day celebration last month.

This was in response to LegCo member Yang Berhormat Abdul Aziz bin Haji Hamdan who suggested that student participation at national events to be made as one specific subject towards efforts in inculcating a sense of belonging among students.

The minister added that the sense of belonging is a reflection of good values being adapted and taught under Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB). The subject focusses on the students’ five responsibilities: themselves, family, neighbour and community, schools, and the country.

“These values must be regarded as a cultural practise in their daily life,” she said.
