Senior citizens in the Belait district received advice on reducing the risk of stroke during a programme at the district’s senior citizen’s centre (PKWE) on Saturday.

The Stroke Awareness Programme was organised by a group of third-year medical students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam, in collaboration with Kare Health Brunei.

The programme aims to help educate the public on stroke recognition and promote physical activity among senior citizens to reduce the risk of stroke. The students also wanted to gauge the public knowledge on stroke.

One of the students, Nursheba Abqarah binti Arifin outlined the various activities held during the programme.

“Some of the activities we conducted include a questionnaire and blood pressure screening to conduct an initial health assessment of participating senior citizens,” she said. The students then engaged the senior citizens in a number of activities and quizzes.

The students also held a talk on identifying and managing stroke symptoms.

“These events are a valuable opportunity for the community to learn and engage in stroke prevention,” she said.

Previously, the group conducted a similar programme at PKWE Lambak for senior citizens in Brunei-Muara on August 6 and 7. The group plans to bring the programme to the Tutong District’s PKWE on August 14. – Daniel Lim
