Steps of solidarity

The AIA One Billion Run 2024 brought an atmosphere of unity and energy to Jerudong Park Colonnade last week, as more than 500 participants embarked on a five-kilometre (km) run to promote fitness, celebrate Brunei Darussalam’s 40th National Day, and raise funds and awareness for autism.

Organised by AIA Brunei, this year’s event further underscored AIA’s mission of encouraging ‘Healthier, Longer, Better Lives’ across Asia and demonstrated the community’s solidarity for autism awareness in Brunei.

The event on November 10 opened with a speech from AIA Brunei Country Manager Kenneth Ling, who emphasised the impact of AIA’s One Billion initiative – a global campaign aiming to engage one billion people in healthier living practices by 2030.

Kenneth Ling explained that AIA’s purpose extends beyond insurance; the company seeks to actively foster communities’ physical, mental, and environmental wellness across its Asian markets.

“AIA has long been dedicated to the goal of empowering people to live healthier, more fulfilling lives,” Kenneth Ling said, noting that AIA One Billion reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive health.

“Thanks to the collective contributions of our participants, sponsors, and volunteers, we’re making a real difference for individuals and communities who need our support.”

RAISING AWARENESS AND FUNDS FOR AUTISM

The AIA One Billion Run 2024 also directed its focus towards autism awareness, with all proceeds supporting Learning Ladders Society and Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei.

These organisations work extensively to provide essential support and advocacy for individuals with autism in Brunei, promoting a greater understanding and acceptance of autism within the community.

Beyond the run itself, participants enjoyed a variety of interactive activities and giveaways at booths.

The booths added to the sense of community and provided additional engagement opportunities, allowing attendees to interact with wellness brands and gain insights into health-related resources available locally.

FESTIVE AND COMMUNAL SPIRIT

Participants, ranging from serious runners to families and supporters of autism awareness, reveled in the festive and communal spirit of the event. As the event concluded, participants left not only with memories of the day’s excitement but with the assurance that they had contributed to a meaningful cause.

By coming together in the name of health, community, and autism awareness, Brunei’s runners and supporters proved that change can start with each step taken in solidarity.
