Imams have expressed concern over the increasing number of congregants who become distracted by their phones during Friday sermons, engaging in activities such as playing games, browsing the internet, or scrolling through social media.
They emphasised that such behavior not only disrupts focus but also goes against the Sunnah and proper etiquette, which require listeners to remain silent and attentive during the sermon. The Imams warned that this lack of attention leads to a significant loss of spiritual rewards and diminishes the unique benefits associated with performing the obligatory Friday prayer.
“It is a brief moment in our week where setting aside worldly matters, including the use of phones, can significantly enhance the spiritual experience,” they noted. “Friday is the chief of all days, a day filled with blessings and glory, and a time to multiply our worship of Allah the Almighty.”
The Imams also highlighted several recommended acts of worship on the sacred day, including increasing the recitation of Salawat upon Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), offering supplications, reading Surah Al-Kahfi, performing the supererogatory bath, and wearing one’s best clothes and perfume. They reminded congregants of the importance of not stepping over others’ rows and maintaining silence during the sermon. – AZLAN OTHMAN
