Spotlight on Shell companies’ achievements

James Kon

Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) recently marked the 50th anniversary of Champion oil field, which produced its first oil from the CP-4 Well in March 1972.

Since then, the oil field’s production has built a strong foundation for BSP and remains a contributor to the Sultanate’s oil and gas production as well as projected to power the country for decades.

These were said by Shell Country Chair in Brunei Darussalam and Managing Director of BSP Agnete Johnsgaard-Lewis during the Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV) Companies’ appreciation night for long service employees at The Rizqun International Hotel on Saturday.

She said BSP continues to invest in developing skills and resources crucial to the sustainable development of Brunei and 2022 has been a fruitful year for the company with many achievements.

Among the achievements are seven exemplary students awarded BSJV Scholarship; a collaboration with SkillsHub through Brunei Asia Pacific Shell Learning Hub (BAPSLH) to upskill local workforce and jobseekers; launch of Brunei Innovation Lab in partnership with Shell LiveWIRE Brunei and Darussalam Enterprise (DARe) to develop the Sultanate’s digital technology ecosystem; and collaboration with Green Brunei for environmental initiatives to support Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP).

Johnsgaard-Lewis also revealed that Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first cargo delivery in December.

As the longest running liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in the world, Brunei LNG continues to create value for Brunei as well as providing employment and nurturing local talents. A notable example is a social investment flagship programme called EmployAbility created this year along with a pilot apprenticeship programme.

She said Brunei LNG continues to transform its way of operating as a business by reducing greenhouse gas emission, making its plant more energy efficient and integrating sustainability with its business strategy.

In 2021, Brunei LNG delivered its first carbon neutral LNG cargo. Being the first in Southeast Asia, it is an important milestone for Brunei LNG as a partner in energy transition for Brunei, ASEAN and globally.

For Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn Bhd (BSM), safety is in its focus. It launched the fourth ‘Fill Safe, Feel Safe’ safety awareness campaign to provide a safe environment for customers and employees at Shell retail stations.

BSM also continues to service the country by ensuring a continuous supply of fuel and expanding its network.

In the past two years, two Shell retail stations have opened and another to open for business later this year in the Temburong District.

She said BSM will innovate and build a sustainable future by diversifying to non-fuel retailing to offer products and services beyond oil and gas.

Johnsgaard-Lewis also commended the efforts and leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Government to bring the nation towards recovery.
