Officers from the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT), Industry and Business Ecosystem Division under the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE) conducted a verification of accuracy readings on axle weight at Sungai Tujoh Control Post, Belait District recently.
According to SDT, the verification of accuracy readings on the unit of axle weight belonging to the Land Transport Department (JPD) at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) and the unit is registered in accordance with the Weights and Measures Act 1983, Chapter 151, Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations, 1994 under Section 3(1) were found to be accurate.
The use of weighing machines is to ensure any heavy vehicles passing through JPD control posts do not exceed the permitted load in accordance with Regulations 161, Road Traffic Act (Chapter 68), any commercial vehicles exceeding the permitted load would be compounded.
The JPD also remind all commercial vehicles entering Brunei Darussalam to comply with the permitted load levels accordingly.
It also recommends all commercial vehicles to have a valid vehicle permit and for drivers of these vehicles to have valid driving licences and abide by the Brunei’s Road Traffic Act.
Traders and users of weight and measure machines are required to comply to the stipulation in the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations, 1994 under Section 3(2); Every person who uses or has in his possession for use of trading of any weight, measure or instrument for weighing not stamped as required by the regulation will be guilty of an offence.
The penalty for such an offence is a fine of BND1,000 or imprisonment for three months or both.
Furthermore, any non-stamped instrument used must be liable to be forfeited and any contract, bargain, sale or dealing made by such weight, measure or instrument for weighing will be deemed void.
