Sports science and medicine conference comes to close

The Sports Science and Medicine Conference Brunei Darussalam 2024 came to a close with a ceremony at The Rizqun International Hotel yesterday.

Medical experts from the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS) and the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM) exchanging views with 250 conference participants during the two-day conference.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad was the guest of honour.

The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by a closing speech from FIMS Vice President Professor Patrick Yung and Director of Youth and Sports at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Umi Kalthum binti Haji Abdul Karim, as chairperson of the Sports Science and Medicine Conference Brunei Darussalam 2024 working committee.

Umi Kalthum said, “In Brunei, sports and exercise medicine and sport sciences are emerging as fields for improving the health and performance of athletes and active individuals. The key topics covered by our speakers highlight the importance of taking actionable steps as a community in the sports field.

“We should demonstrate our commitment through impactful actions, implementing effective measures and strategies supported by data and current research.

“This involves recognising intervention strategies, adapting training conditions, improving recovery, and providing health support.”

She added that ultimately, these efforts lead to a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi also presented certificates and souvenirs to the guest speakers, moderators and sponsors.

Meanwhile, a welcoming dinner for delegates and participants of Sports Science and Medicine Conference Brunei Darussalam 2024 was held at Tarindak d’Polo, Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club, Jerudong on Wednesday.

“The Sports Science and Medicine Conference Brunei Darussalam 2024 marks a significant milestone for us. It brings together such a diverse array of experts and practitioners, all united by a shared passion for advancing the fields of sports and medicine,” he said.

He added, “Throughout the day, we have engaged in enlightening discussions, exchanged valuable insights and established meaningful connections. The wealth of knowledge and expertise in this room is truly remarkable and I am confident that our collective efforts will lead to significant advancements in the realms of sports and medicine.” – Azlan Othman & James Kon
