Sports facilities need revamp

As a new tennis player, I am compelled to bring attention to the lamentable state of our national tennis centre and the wider condition of sporting facilities in our country.

In recent months, I have dedicated myself to honing my tennis skills and passion for the sport at the national tennis centre. However, the current state of the facilities has left me disheartened and dispirited. The courts, in their broken and unplayable condition, not only pose risks of injury but also hinder players from realising their full potential. Furthermore, the unpleasant odour and dilapidated state of the toilets and changing rooms add to the discomfort, making the overall experience less than ideal. Additionally, the absence of basic amenities such as water dispensers or vending machines further exacerbates the challenges faced by players during practice sessions and matches.

Brunei boasts tremendous potential in the realm of sports, and nurturing this potential should be a foremost priority for our government and sporting authorities. Not only do sports promote a healthier and fitter society, but it also instils values of discipline, teamwork and perseverance in our youth. To fully capitalise on this potential, we must address the state of our sporting infrastructure.

One viable approach to rejuvenating our sporting facilities, including the national tennis centre, is through privatisation. By engaging private investors, managers, and expertise, we can infuse funds and efficiency into the system. Privatisation could pave the way for significant improvements in the maintenance of facilities, ensuring regular upgrades, and providing a more enjoyable experience for athletes and enthusiasts alike. Moreover, private entities are often incentivised to make sports facilities profitable, which could result in additional resources for talent development and access to better coaching.

As we explore the possibilities of privatisation, it is essential to draw inspiration from successful cases within our own nation. A prime example of the positive impact of privatisation can be found in the transformation of the sports facilities at a local university.

The privatisation of their sporting infrastructure led to upgraded facilities, enhanced services, and better accessibility for students and the public alike. By emulating such success stories, we can envision a future where Brunei’s sporting facilities become a source of pride and inspiration for all.

In addition to privatisation, we must also consider innovative solutions to adapt to our ever-changing weather conditions. Other countries in the region have shown commendable foresight by investing in covered courts, allowing athletes to continue training and playing irrespective of weather fluctuations. By incorporating weather-resilient infrastructure into our sporting facilities, we can ensure that our athletes can train and compete effectively throughout the year.

To achieve these ambitious goals, it is crucial for the government to actively participate in creating an environment conducive to sports development. Policy frameworks that incentivise private investments in sports infrastructure and offer tax benefits to sponsors can be explored.

Furthermore, public-private partnerships could be established to ensure judicious use of funds and resources.

Additionally, engaging with sports associations and stakeholders, including athletes and coaches, is vital in shaping a comprehensive plan to uplift our sporting facilities. By seeking input from those who use and understand the facilities’ challenges best, we can design tailored solutions that meet the specific needs of each sport.

In conclusion, the sorry state of our sporting facilities, particularly the national tennis centre, calls for immediate attention and action. Our nation’s potential in sports is boundless, and by investing in better facilities and weather-resilient infrastructure, we can nurture a new generation of athletes and foster a healthier, more vibrant society.
