Special publication chronicles 56 years of Sultan’s reign

The Brunei History Association (PESEBAR) in collaboration with the Brunei History Centre (PSB) will hold a launching ceremony for the publication of a book Sultanate of Brunei From Various Perspectives to coincide with the 9th general meeting of the PESEBAR tomorrow at the PSB.

The special publication is a contribution from PESEBAR in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 77th birthday celebration.

PESEBAR Acting President Haji Mohd Rozan bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yunos revealed this at a media briefing yesterday.

Haji Mohd Rozan said, “As an association that pays attention to the development of the country’s history, PESEBAR wants to record the events and development of the country’s history throughout the 56 years of His Majesty’s reign which will be used as memories as well as aspirations of the present and future generations.

“The publication of the book was sponsored by Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and PESEBAR expresses its gratitude for the sponsorship. The book contains 18 papers contributed by domestic and foreign writers, including the youth in the country.

“The youth should be motivated and encouraged to research and write the country’s history. They are the heirs of the country and an important asset of the nation to continue recording the history of our country so that it stands strong in the face of changing times.

“The papers highlight the development and achievements during His Majesty’s reign as well as the periods beyond.”

Haji Mohd Rozan also said, “Some of the objectives for the publication of the book is to encourage research, study, writing and publication of the history of Brunei which has not yet been fully explored by the locals, especially during the 56 years of His Majesty’s reign. The book will also serve as a platform to instil love for one’s own history and fuelling patriotism, especially among the younger generation.

“The publication of the book not only adds to the wealth of historical and socio-cultural studies of our country, but also acts as a driving force to improve studies on the history and socio-culture of Brunei Darussalam.”

PSB Principal Dr Haji Muhammad Hadi bin Muhammad Melayong and PESEBAR Honorary Secretary Professor Dr Haji Awang Asbol bin Haji Mail were present during the briefing.

The book took two years to complete and had 18 contributing authors. – Azlan Othman
