Special needs education for religious teachers

Seventy-nine participants comprising special religious education officers and teachers attended a four-day sharing session on Teaching Programme for special needs students (autism) at the Jerudong Religious School Hall.

The programme, which commenced yesterday, is an effort to improve the quality of teaching and learning in special education for religious special education teachers. It is organised by the Islamic Studies Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs through the Religious Special Education Unit of the Religious School Division.

Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei President Pengiran Zamri bin Pengiran Haji Bujang and the Headmaster of Jerudong Religious School Haji Muhd Said bin Haji Mustafa attended the opening ceremony.

The programme aims to provide exposure to the special religious education teachers on the characteristics and symptoms of autistic students and empower the teachers’ capabilities in dealing with them.

It also serves as a platform for brainstorming between teachers regarding the strategies and techniques used in teaching students with special needs and to introduce and practice of Individual Learning Approach, integrative approach, structured learning and also specific therapies to control the behaviour of autistic students.
