Southeast Asia’s largest wind farm to begin power exports to Vietnam

ANN/VIENTIANE TIMES – The 600MW Monsoon Wind Power Project, in Laos’ Xekong and Attapeu provinces, is set to connect to Vietnam’s electricity grid next month, paving the way for power exports slated to begin in the second quarter of 2025.

Under a 25-year power purchase agreement, the electricity generated by the region’s largest wind farm will be sold to Vietnam Electricity (EVN). Power will be transmitted through a 71-kilometre transmission line, 27 kilometres of which are within Laos.

In the second quarter, the operators plan to deliver an initial 300MW of power to Vietnam, ramping up to the full 600MW by the third quarter as production scales up. Future plans envision an expansion of production capacity to 1,000MW.

During a visit to the project site in Dakcheung district, Xekong province, Laos’ Party Secretary General and State President Thongloun Sisoulith commended the efforts of the companies and stakeholders involved in the near-completed wind farm. The President emphasised the importance of environmental protection and urged project operators to support local communities by facilitating agricultural and livestock initiatives, benefiting both residents and project staff.
