South Korean youth experience Belait traditions

Since arriving in the Sultanate last week, the 10-member South Korean delegation has embarked on a tour across the country as part of an exchange programme.

The group visited the Belait District yesterday where Acting Belait District Officer Haji Amirol Hafidzin bin Haji Muhammad introduced the youth to the heritage and traditions of the district at his residence.

A short video was also presented to highlight the various iconic landmarks of the district.

The youth also experienced the Belait tradition in the form of a gulingtangan performance.

During their time at the residence, the youth immersed themselves in the traditional Bruneian wedding – malam berbedak; and took a closer look at an array of local handicrafts and wares.

The youth also sampled traditional kuih and cuisines prepared by members of Pertiwi Association, who also shared tips and tricks on how to prepare local delicacies.

The group also visited the Belait District Museum where they learned about the history and the oil and gas industry. They also visited the Billionth Barrel Monument.

One youth member, Je Hyun-park, said he was impressed with the oil and gas industry in Belait. He added, “I also got to try delicious food and experience a traditional wedding on top of that.”

Group leader Sieun Park, meanwhile, said the visit was an eye-opener as it shed light on the unique culture and heritage of Belait.

“Honestly, while it is easy to find information on Brunei, much of the information found online only pertains to Bandar Seri Begawan. So researching on Belait District can be quite challenging. But luckily, we were able to visit the district to experience it for ourselves,” she said.

Organised by the Korean Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, the programme provides opportunities for youth to travel and experience diverse cultures to cultivate a global mindset. – Daniel Lim
